  • Celebrating Women Artists and Women in the Art World

Marcelle Ferron, Sans titre, 1960, (Price realized: $1,260,000)

    by Katherine Meredith, Art Specialist

Cowley Abbott is proud to celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8th. We honour and recognize women’s participation in many aspects of the art world: as artists, collectors, curators, philanthropists, art patrons, teachers, and more.

First of all, I would like to acknowledge the women who make up the majority of the fantastic team at Cowley Abbott, starting with Partner and Vice President Lydia Abbott, and my colleagues Anna Holmes, Catherine Lacroix, Nicole Plaskett, Sydney Rodrigues and Julia De Kwant. Our unique combination of expertise, professionalism, creativity and organization make the auction house excel in the industry. Lydia and Anna have also formed a women’s group of clients, professionals and colleagues in the art world, who meet regularly for exhibition tours. Last spring, Lydia and Anna hosted a panel at Cowley Abbott on the topic of women in the Canadian art industry. I look forward to being a part of this initiative as it grows further, and please contact us if you wish to be a part of this group!

I recently read a fascinating article in The New York Times that resonated with me in many ways. Entitled “Gathering Force in the Art Market: Female Collectors”, the article states that with women controlling an increasing share of global wealth, they are spending more money on art than men are. The author also notes that women are particularly thoughtful when collecting art, focusing on nurturing artists careers, or highlighting historically underrepresented artists. I have noticed firsthand that the next generation of collectors — particularly millennials, and particularly women — are driven less by speculation or “trophy names” and more by shared values, substance, and story. In Canada, this has translated into strong engagement with Indigenous and women artists who were long overlooked by the market.

The New York Times article also mentions how there is a growing presence of women on museum boards and acquisition committees, and thus are influencing exhibitions and collecting practices. Museums in Canada and abroad are showing more exhibitions devoted to women artists than they did over the last few decades. The recent exhibition Helen McNicoll: An Impressionist Journey, was held at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and soon will be presented at the National Gallery of Canada. Cowley Abbott was a proud sponsor of the Hamilton exhibition and we were thrilled to see The Chintz Sofa again – one of the highlights of our December 2023 auction of An Important Private Collection. The show brought together dozens of works in what was described as the first major retrospective of McNicoll’s work in about a century.

Similarly, Joyce Wieland: Heart On, organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery of Ontario, was the first full retrospective devoted to Wieland in nearly forty years. The exhibition assembled more than 100 works across media—painting, collage, textiles, prints, and experimental films—to show the breadth of her practice and position her as a major figure in twentieth-century art and film. Curators emphasized themes that feel particularly resonant today: feminism, national identity, social justice, and environmental awareness.

For the past four years, Cowley Abbott has been organizing online auctions dedicated to women artists every March, due to high demand and in honour of Women’s History Month. These sales have proven to be very popular with collectors. This year, I feel we have a particularly strong selection of historical, post-war and contemporary artists in the auction, which is entitled “Celebrating Women Artists” and runs from March 10th to 24th, 2026.

A highlight of the auction is a beautiful mother and child portrait by Canadian painter Mary Alexandra Bell Eastlake (1864-1951). Although not exclusively a figure painter, the artist was known for her depictions of women and children in domestic outdoor settings, which was deemed an acceptable subject for female painters of the time. Eastlake’s paintings have drawn very strong interest in recent years, with When Spring Rides Through the Woods selling for $96,000 in this past November’s live auction, and In The Orchard setting the auction record for Eastlake in 2023, achieving a price of $168,000.

Two post-war highlights in the auction are abstract paintings by Quebec artists Marcella Maltais (1933-2018), and Lise Gervais (1933-1998). Both women emerged in the 1950s–60s Quebec art scene, following the influence of Paul-Émile Borduas and the Automatistes while developing their own personal forms of lyrical abstraction.

We are excited to have a charming embroidered crest by Joyce Wieland in the auction, entitled The White Snow Goose of Canada. It was produced in 1971 while the artist was experimenting with a wide range of materials and exploring ideas of tactility in art. Her work was deeply political, addressing nationalism, feminism, and ecology. This White Snow Goose of Canada crest brings these themes together, reflecting the artist’s interest in their interconnectedness.

Another highlight of “Celebrating Women Artists” that I would like to draw attention to is a collection of works by Anne Kahane (1924-2023), an Austrian-born Montreal sculptor known for her expressive figurative sculptures exploring themes of human suffering, resilience, and social justice. She worked during a period when women sculptors were relatively rare, and created numerous public monuments across Canada. Kahane is now recognized as an important figure in Canadian sculpture, yet she is still not widely known to the public. However, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is organizing an exhibition on her work, opening in November 2026. Cowley Abbott is excited to have four lots in our auction from the estate of Anne Kahane, including brass sculptures and colourful woodblock prints.

I invite you to browse the auction for more compelling works by Canadian women artists. It is inspiring to see the growing recognition of these artists and the many women helping to shape the future of the art world in Canada and worldwide.

    That’s a Wrap on 2025!

This past year was an eventful one for Cowley Abbott, and we are grateful to the Canadian art community for their continued support.

Our November live auction boasts many impressive results, including a 85% sell-through rate, multiple bidding wars, and auction records for works by J.W. Morrice and Lionel LeMoine Fitzgerald. Our 2025 Spring live auction also saw strong results, including artist records for Yves Gaucher, Frances Anne Hopkins, and others. View all 2025 live auction results here.

2025 saw many “firsts” for Cowley Abbott, including:

A private sales booth at Art Toronto (October 2025): Our first presence at the fair as an exhibitor, allowing us to showcase select works and connect with new collectors.

A David Blackwood selling exhibition: Presented in collaboration with the Blackwood Estate, this marked our first selling show devoted entirely to the artist.

The “Ideas of North” exhibition: Curated by Mark Cheetham, this was our first academically curated thematic exhibition, offering a fresh perspective on northern imagery in Canadian art.

Our 5 à 7 cocktail events went on tour: We hosted these collector evenings off-site, partnering with both Olga Korper Gallery and Stephen Bulger Gallery.

Launch of our new website: A major milestone, providing clients with a streamlined browsing and bidding experience across all departments. The website will evolve in early 2026, providing new features and bidding experience, allowing collectors an expansive experience as they continue to collect with Cowley Abbott. Stay tuned!

  • A $36 Million Collection of Canadian Art

A $36 Million Collection of Canadian Art

An Important Private Collection is among the best-known private assemblages of artwork in Canada. Meticulously collected and beloved by the family for over sixty years, the paintings and sculpture are rare and important examples by our country’s most celebrated historical artists, featuring masterpieces by Paul Kane, Cornelius Krieghoff, J.W. Morrice, each of the ten members of the Group of Seven, Clarence Gagnon, David Milne, and many, many others. The collection has been featured in major national and international exhibitions, as well as illustrated in textbooks. The artworks are highly coveted for their museum-quality and rarity within the auction market.

    Tom Thomson, Petawawa Gorges, 1916
    Price Realized: $2,220,000
Lawren Harris, Quiet Lake (Northern Painting 12), c. 1926-1928
    Price Realized: $2,160,000

Cowley Abbott was privileged to be awarded the collection on consignment from the Toronto collectors during the summer of 2022, and our team immediately began work on a plan to effectively offer the 159 works of art across three live auction seasons, from Fall 2022 through the Fall 2023 season. The collection was divided across the three catalogue sales, and our firm employed leading Canadian art academics to tell the story of these incredible artworks, the great majority of which were appearing at auction for the first time.

Cowley Abbott designed an extensive eighteen-month program of collector events, promotional materials, and media outreach that excited the Canadian auction and culture industries. With a strong focus upon the artwork itself, the series of sales was a celebration of Canadian art, our country’s history, and the collectors themselves, having selflessly shared their works of art to appear in books and exhibitions around the globe that focused upon the very best of Canada’s art. The sales captured the attention and excitement of the public and, importantly, collectors of rare Canadian artwork.

Frederic Varley, Sun and Wind, Georgian Bay, 1916 or 1920
    Price Realized: $984,000
    A.Y. Jackson, Tadenac, November
    Price Realized: $936,000

When the final gavel fell during the evening of December 6th, 2023, the collection had grossed over $36 million, an auction record for the sale of a private collection of Canadian art. 95% of the artwork successfully found buyers, with three-quarters of those works exceeding the high-end of pre-sale expectations. Twenty-nine artist records were smashed across the three sales, injecting renewed interest and enthusiasm for a variety of historical Canadian art at auction.

Clarence Gagnon, The Ice Harvest, Quebec, 1935
    Price Realized: $984,000
Robert Clow Todd, Corbeau at Montmorency Falls, 1845
    Price Realized: $744,000

Cowley Abbott is privileged to have handled these artworks and is thrilled to find them new homes. One of the most enjoyable aspects of our live auctions is allowing the public to experience these masterful artworks for a brief period before they pass into new hands. Several of the works were offered for the first time, and many for the last time, during this generation. We are grateful to our wonderful consignors, collectors, and the Canadian art community for its continued support and participation throughout a momentous and record-breaking period for Cowley Abbott.

  • A Look At Cowley Abbott Valuation Days

A Look At Cowley Abbott Valuation Days

Cowley Abbott kicked off our first valuation days of the 2025 season in Toronto on February 12th and another on March 19th. It was at these valuation days that specialists consigned a W.J. Phillips and provided a valuation for a Joyce Weiland artwork.

From February 20th – 27th, President Rob Cowley and Senior Art Specialist Anna Holmes travelled the east coast beginning in Charlottetown, P.E.I., making stops in Halifax, Nova Scotia and ending in Fredericton, New Brunswick. During this trip our team spoke with the press, including CBC radio and tv in Charlottetown, Global and CBC in Halifax (view here), and CBC radio in Fredericton; and of course, valued incredible works of art. Rob also had the opportunity to speak to students at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia about the auction world and an important private collection.

A range of regional artists were viewed at our east coast valuation days, such as A.Y. Jackson, Mary Pratt, Frederick Arthur Verner, A.J. Casson, Maud Lewis, Molly Lamb Bobak. International artist highlights included a work by Pablo Picasso. We were also entrusted with some incredible consignments, including a canvas by Yves Gaucher and a canvas by Fern Coppedge which will both be offered in our upcoming live auction.

Also while on the East Coast Rob had the opportunity to speak with students from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia about the auction market and an important private collection.

On April 3rd, our valuation day was hosted by The Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, Ontario, where Rob Cowley gave a talk on “Artwork Tales”. This talk focused on exciting highlights sold at Cowley Abbott such as Ukrainian Proverb by William Kurelek, Algoma (Algoma Sketch 48) by Lawren Harris and DHead XLVI by David Bowie.

Rob also discussed the amazing results from the Private Collection auctions in 2023/2024 and highlighted the Joyce Putnam Bequest of paintings that the Agnes Etherington Art Centre has in their collection, which consisted primarily of Group of Seven works. It was a valuation day to remember and a huge thank you to all who joined the talk!

Our April 6th Valuation day saw Canadian Art Specialist Eryn Brobyn and Senior Canadian & International Art Specialist Perry Tung travel to the Art Gallery of Hamilton where they were delighted to value works by Andy Warhol, Alexandra Luke, and Tom Hodgson.

Our firm looks forward to the valuation days of this upcoming season, including a visit to Niagara on the Lake at The Riverbrink Museum on April 25. We thank everyone for their participation in our valuation days.
