Cowley Abbott expanded in 2021 to include an international art department to meet the needs of buyers and sellers of international art in Canada, and abroad. The department has grown steadily, providing Canadian collectors with the opportunity to acquire international artworks, while also serving clients around the globe.
We sell artworks by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Sayed Haider Raza, Fernando Botero, and David Hockney. One of our biggest success stories is that of DHead XLVI, a small portrait by David Bowie that was found at a donation centre in Northern Ontario for $5. After conducting thorough research and consulting a David Bowie specialist in the United Kingdom, we confirmed that the painting was by the famous singer and part of a series he completed in the 1990s. The artwork made global headlines and fetched CA$108,120 at a June 2021 auction, establishing a new global auction record for a David Bowie work.
